A view of the Kurakhove Power Plant in the frontline town of Kurakhove, Donetsk region, Ukraine, on 20 January 2024. This facility used to be a vital energy source in eastern Ukraine before the full-scale Russian invasion turned Kurakhove into a battleground and the plant into one of Russia’s primary targets in the area. In January 2025, after weeks of fighting, Russian forces captured Kurakhove and destroyed the power plant.
Biography
Serhii Korovayny is a Ukrainian photojournalist who documents the Russian-Ukrainian war, with a focus on conflict, environmental issues, and displacement. He is a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal and has also worked with TIME, The Washington Post, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, and The Financial Times.
A Fulbright scholar, Korovayny earned his MA in Photography from Syracuse University, New York. He received the James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting in 2022, participated in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in 2024, and was recognized by POYi and NPPA in 2025.
